Eivind Opsvik’s iconic Overseas band returns to Bar LunÀtico for the first time since the pre-Covid era.

“Some of the most slyly fascinating music on the scene today….In the same way [Opsvik] avoids concrete references to genres, he doesn’t point directly to emotions or moods. The richness of the instrumental sound becomes its own emotional content: The music is not telling you where to be or what to feel.” — New York Times

Opsvik, born and bred in Norway but a long-time resident of New York City, has developed an utterly individual musical soundprint, one that blends the song-minded composition and creative studio craft of art rock with the virtuosic edge and spontaneity of progressive jazz. He produces and mixes music for other artists, and has performed internationally in the ensembles of such artists as Anthony Braxton, Okkyung Lee, Tony Malaby, David Binney, Tim Berne, Mary Halvorson, Paul Motian, and Nate Wooley. He has also collaborated with the likes of Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Brian Blade, Craig Taborn, and Skuli Sverrison.

The Overseas band — with this specific lineup — has existed for twenty years in an environment where new projects quickly come and go. But the group has stayed fresh and reshaped their sound over the years for every new recording, documenting each stage in their evolution. Over the years they have developed a second nature connection and an elastic approach to time, pitch, and harmony. It’s like one big breathing organism.
