LunÁtico warmly welcomes Oran Etkin’s Open Arms project with this outstanding lineup of musicians:

Oran Etkin ~ Bass Clarinet, Sax
Vinícius Gomes ~ Guitar
Alex Kautz ~ Drums
Gili Lopes ~ Bass

With Open Arms Project, clarinetist ORAN ETKIN flipped the traditional tape-then-tour model, taking time off during his tours to live with mbira masters in Zimbabwe, create new music with Roma musicians in Czech Republic and collaborate with legendary songwriters in Rio de Janeiro and innovative composers in Paris and São Paulo. The new album features these on-location recordings alongside reimagined versions by his international touring band. The band is enhanced with electronics as the musicians improvisationally trigger loops of samples from the original recordings creating new textures and grooves. Imagine loops of hand-clapping from Zimbabwe, a string instrument from Turkey, two flutes from Brazil, triggered in and out spontaneously, feeding off the band's live energy. This fresh combination of deeply traditional sounds with forward looking improvisations tells a story of an opening and connected world, rooted in its cultures but yet intent on forging a bold path forward.

ORAN ETKIN has been described as "ebullient" by the New York Times and "composer of eminent individuality" by Yusef Lateef. He was voted #1 Rising Star Clarinetist in DownBeat Magazine's 2016 Critics Poll and has been invited several times to Harvard University as a guest lecturer. Etkin's music can be heard on concert stages worldwide and numerous recordings including a Grammy Award Winning anti-bullying compilation album. Etkin's duo concert with Sullivan Fortner in Paris was chosen as one of the Top 6 Musical Highlights of the year by Libération, which described it as "a concert of weightlessness, class, spark, inspiration and sharing. Magic uninterrupted for two hours. The crowd... went wild. For such is the music of Etkin: sensitive to the exchange with the audience.”
