SPENCER ZAHN is an award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist who has released several albums both as a solo artist and as a collaborator. His music is marked by openness: spacious, intriguing sonic spaces, rich with contributions from his creative community.
Zahn’s 2022 release titled Pigments is the critically acclaimed collaboration between he and Dawn Richard. Pigments is a deeply empathetic and compassionate project that opens itself up to both individual reflection and communal connection. Not strictly classical, jazz or ambient electronica but rather a body of “movements,” Pigments is one long composition guided by Richard’s stripped-down vocals with a string orchestra, woodwinds, electronic instruments, synthesizers, drums, and upright bass. While recording the album, Zahn focused on capturing the sound of the room and the breath of the players to foster a feeling of spaciousness, as well as acknowledging all the beings who contributed to Pigments.
In November 2023, he released his latest album, Statues. This double LP features Zahn as a solo pianist as well as ensemble leader. The album features compositions that were written during a six month period of solitary focus. Approaching composition more minimally than the instrumentation and arrangements of Pigments, the first half of Statues is made up of subdued, solo piano works. While the second half of the material consists of an ensemble featuring Tyler Gilmore aka BlankFor.ms, Spencer Ludwig, Chris Bullock, Jas Walton, and Booker Stardrum.
Zahn splits his time between New York and Los Angeles working with a wide range of musicians and artists. He will be releasing more new music in 2024.
