Igor Lumpert, although currently based in Brooklyn, is originally from Slovenia. In contemporary jazz, there is often a divide between the more traditional performers and those linked to the avant-garde, and Lumpert’s strength lies in his ability to fuse these two often conflicting traditions. His playing has echoes of Ben Webster, Wayne Shorter, and also the Art Ensemble of Chicago, all reconceived through his own distinct musical sensibility.

Lumpert began his professional training at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria. During this period, he was a member of Munich-based band Sidewinders, winner of the “Best Jazz Group of Germany” award. After completing his studies with honors, Igor was invited by Reggie Workman to study at the New School University in New York City. In 2000, Lumpert moved to New York and trained with noted jazz masters George Garzone, Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, and Chico Hamilton. Lumpert has appeared at jazz festivals in Vancouver, Munich, Ljubljana and many others.

Lumpert’s work with Innertextures has formed the heart of his career. The band’s last album, “I Am The Spirit of The Earth”, reflects both Igor’s Slovenian roots and Brooklyn journey. Innertextures has released five albums: “I Am The Spirit of The Earth” (2022), Eleven (2018), “Innertextures live” (2012), “Mineral Mind” (2009) and “Innertextures” (2004). The most recent three albums, released on the Portuguese label Cleen Feed Records, received critical praise for their “elusive lightness” and “original funk brilliance.”

"Drawing on M-BASE practices of additive rhythmic phrasing and intervallic development, his writing also betrays a certain organic flow and danceability. The date is memorable for its happy marriage of cerebral and visceral inclinations: the relaxed and almost offhand delivery of cleverly calculated themes and sophisticated improvisations with ingenuous enthusiasm." — NYC Jazz Record

“Lumpert knits all the pieces together with ecstatic vision, and the result is an organic work that makes every risk feel right and necessary.” — Jazz Trail ( January 2023 )
